AbstractAlgebra is an important strand of the Hong Kong Curriculum. Though some pre-algebra work is done in primary school years, both textbook writers and secondary school teachers usually do not assume that students have such experience and algebra is taught anew in S1. This paper attempts to summarize the difficulties in the beginning stage of learning algebra observed in recent research and to identify some of the possible local problems in the teaching and learning of algebra. Discussion will focus on the following areas: (i) algebra as generalised arithmetic, (ii) the interpretation of letters and (iii) the writing of equations.
