Abstract | In Hong Kong, the tuberculous infections, meningitis (TBM) is a notifiable disease. In this population of six million, the average incidence of TBM among the one-to 9-year age group was three per year, 1.3 per year among the 10 to 19 year age group and only one reported case of TBM in the under-one-year age group during the period from 1988 to 1993. No upward trend was detected. In this paper, the authors presented two cases with childhood tuberculous meningitis highlighting the presenting clinical features and difficulties in early confirmatory diagnosis even with the rapid diagnostic test, i.e. tuberculostearic acid (TBSA) and M. tuberculosis polymerase chain reaction (TBPCR). A review of literature of literature regarding TBSA and PCR was undertaken. |
