AbstractChronic hepatitis B virus infection, adverse drug reaction and fatty liver are probably the commonest hepatic disorders that the author has encountered in the general medical practice in Hong Kong giving rise to mildly deranged liver function tests. There are of course other hepatic conditions that preferentially lead to elevation in transaminases or alkaline phosphatase with or without concurrent increase in the gamma GT level. The degree of severity of deranged liver function tests is one of the important factors in deciding what actions to take. In cases of incidental finding of mild derangement of liver function tests (less than twice the upper normal range), the author proposes simply repeating the blood tests after 2-3 months to see the trend to determine what actions should be taken.
