| Abstract | Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan was in Tokyo for discussions with his counterpart Shunji Yanai. The main issue, as reiterated by China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang on 29 October 1996, was the Diaoyu Islands problem. Two other topics were also raised: Japanese compensation for wartime chemical weapons left in China, talks on which would start in December 1996, and continued dialogue on American-Japanese security arrangements. |
