| Abstract | Although the United States President Clinton appears to have the political muscle to override Congressional objections and force through another year's extension of China's Most Favoured Nation status, Congressional opposition has not gone away. Much of it may centre round the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, whose remarks during a visit to China earlier in 1997 offended many proponents of early Chinese accession to the World Trade Organization. |
