AbstractAn academic conference under the theme of "Interpretations of Hope" organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong in association with the Graduate Theological Union was held on 28-31 November 1997 to provide a forum for exchange among different disciplines on the subject of human hope. It was aimed at pursuing, through the dialogue between Chinese and western religions, the transforming significance of the motif of hope in connection with the socio-cultural dimensions of the human race. The similarities and differences between western and Chinese religions (Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and popular religions) in dealing with the notion of hope were investigated.
