AbstractAs Hong Kong prepares to rejoin China, its people are redefining their sense of self. Since the end of World War II, a whole generation has grown to maturity in the territory. Unlike the sojourners and refugees that made up previous ones, its members consider Hong Kong their home. They have a stock of shared experiences and take considerable pride in the territory's acheivements. These building blocks of a unique often remain with them even after they emigrate. As the territory gears up for its imminent return to China, many Hong Kongers are pondering ways they can relate more closely with their mainland compatriots without surrendering their own special characteristics.
