AbstractAtrial fibrillation is common in the elderly and is a well-established risk factor for ischaemic stroke. The prevalence of this risk factor was studied prospectively in acute stroke patients admitted into the United Christian Hospital, Hong Kong. Acute ischaemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation were older, and had more severe clinical presentation as reflected by lower Canadian Neurological Stroke score. Univariate analysis has identified 3 significant risk factors of in-hospital morality for ischaemic stroke: age at or older than 70 years, a low Canadian Neurological Stroke score of 7 or less, and atrial fibrillation.
