Abstract | For all the heated predictions, most stock markets reacted coolly to the death of China's paramount leader Deng Xiaoping. Hong Kong, which is most suspectible to political events on the mainland, actually surged in a flurry of "panic buying." In fact, the exchanges of Greater China (Hong Kong, Taiwan and China's Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses) have recently been among the best performers in Asia. HSBC Asset Management director Stella Yiu believes that, once the situation settles down, they will continue to climb. |
