AbstractThe signs are propitious in the Year of the Ox. This historic year of reversion of Hong Kong sovereignty to China promises steady, if not spectacular economic growth, relatively low inflation and more moderate rates of unemployment. The fact that the current year is such an important one in Hong Kong's history, with the mid-year transfer of sovereignty to China taking centre stage, at once makes things less difficult in some respects and more difficult in others. In this article, the author who is the assistant director and chief economist with Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce analyzes the economic prospects for the year of 1997.
