AbstractDeng Xiaoping's epochal economic reforms seemed to underline the Beijing government's continuing commitment to "socialism with Chinese characteristics" or, to call it by its more recent name, "market socialism." It is left to Deng's designated heir, President Jiang Zemin, to carry Deng's ideas forward while putting his own stamp on them. Barring a cataclysmic accident, 1997 will be the year China sets the seal on the succession process, with Jiang heading the "third-generation" leadership of the People's Republic.
