Abstract | In recent months, world attention has focused on the pyrotechnics across the Taiwan Strait. But in China itself, a major campaign has been unfolding that may have no less an impact on the nation's future. First inside the inner circles of the Communist Party and then among ever-widening audiences, President and party chief Jiang Zemin has been calling for greater national attention to politics. Other senior leaders have joined the chorus, echoing Jiang's slogan: "Talk politics." They, and the national media, are laying new stress on "socialist spiritual civilization." |
