| Abstract | Average funding costs increased during the September quarter of 1996, resulting in a contraction of the average interest rate spread. Growth in total customer deposits rebounded. This combined with a decelerated growth in total loans resulted in an improvement in the loan-to-deposit ratio. Despite the squeeze in margins, profitablility of the banking sector remained solid. |
