AbstractWhat is known as the 'sun shading device' in today's architectural vocabulary refers to a component of architecture that is scientifically designed from the onset for the specific purpose of reducing solar heat transmission into the building through the effect of shading. Sun shading devices usually assume the form of a system of fins or screens attached to the exterior surfaces of buildings. The sun shading devices discussed in this article are very much a tectonic ethos of Modern Architecture. Some of the problematic aspects of Hong Kong's buildings that are responsible for their over-dependence on air-conditioning are also examined in this article.
