| Abstract | No fewer than seven Government departments were involved in the operation to restore order to the Whitehead Detention Centre at Shatin during a violent uprising on May 20, 1995 by the 10,500 Vietnamese migrants in the camp. In the aftermath, 127 Police officers, 51 Correctional Services Department (CSD) officers and 27 Vietnamese were injured and large parts of the Whitehead Detention Centre were seriously damaged. Governor Chris Patten praised Police and CSD officers for showing 'considerable restraint' in quelling the 'appalling violence' by the Vietnamese. |
