AbstractWhen the Report on the School Management Initiative (SMI) was published in March 1991, a research team, comprising the Principal, three school managers and three teachers of Sha Tin Methodist College was appointed by the School Management Committee to prepare the school for joining the SMI Scheme at suitable times. The spirit of the SMI Scheme is to provide schools with a greater degree of autonomy in the implementation of professional management measures in education and in the improvement of quality in teaching. To achieve these aims, meetings of teachers were held with team leaders and panel chairmen to exchange views on the school management framework and suggestions on resources allocation were raised. Some of the misunderstandings were also clarified. In this article, the author shares his experiences in how the teachers encountered the difficulties and what they felt about the SMI Scheme.
