AbstractSince the late 1970s when China opened up to foreign influence and the massive importation of foreign technology and goods, foreign culture has flowed in through the mass media and through exposure to foreign culture from the contiguous areas of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Added to this is the accelerating influence of satellite TV, facsimile transmission, on-line international computer networks and of course, last but not least, personal contacts between overseas Chinese, Westerners, and citizens of the People's Republic, including those who go abroad and return either for visits or to live. This paper tries to raise is, whether this flood of contacts made an impact on the Chinese language as used in the media, particularly in the area of lexical importation.
