Abstract | This paper is divided into four parts. In the first instance, the author suggests that, in Hong Kong as elsewhere, France is subjected to a number of cliches which are constructed and maintained by a collective imaginary that assigns to France a specific role on the international stage. In the second part, he notes that as supremacy of English as the international medium of communication is perceived by the French as a form of cultural supremacy, the same as Hong Kong. The third part reviews the facilities in place in Hong Kong which cater for quite a high demand for French language courses. The final part is devoted to a discussion on the prospects of teaching French in Hong Kong. |
