Abstract | Hong Kong's economy grew more slowly in the early part of 1996, following its slow-down in the latter half of 1996, following its slow-down in the latter half of 1995. Expansion in the external sector has been moderate due to weak overseas demand, while, at the same time, growth has been further restrained by a number of one-off factors. Private consumption has remained sluggish, partly because of slowing income growth, and consumer sentiment has also weakened due to the deteriorating employment situation at the beginning of the year. During this period, robust investment spending - in particular, that related to infrastructural projects - continued to underpin economic growth. Detailed analysis of the Hong Kong economy 1996 are given in this article. |
