AbstractHong Kong is increasingly looked upon by overseas countries as the centre of trade for Southeast Asia, as well as the gateway to China.Over the past five years trade with other countries has been increasing steadily, and undeterred by any fears about the changeover in 1997, more and more foreign companies are establishing Asian headquarters here. Most major trading partners report increased figures for 1995 and the first quarter of 1996. To find out whether these partners look forward to maintaining this growth, particularly in light of the changes that July 1997 will bring various trade commissioners have been approached for comments. The first in the series, which is reported in this article, is Italy, a country showing the largest annual growth in trading figures with Hong Kong, with a 26% increase in the past financial year.
