AbstractA child health service should emphasize primary and secondary preventive strategies, encourage active participation of parents, discourage unnecessary dependence on professionals and be responsive to the changing needs of the children and their families. Screening activities should be clinically rational and cost effective. General practitioners in Hong Kong can contribute a lot more in child health promotion. This article aims to review the major current issues in child health promotion and whether such concepts are practical in a general practice setting in Hong Kong. A review of the terminology and theoretical issues is first presented, followed by a discussion of the practical issues.
