Abstract | The fear that has fuelled much of the hysteria surrounding the hand-over of sovereignty of Hong Kong is that China will not keep its promise of "one country, two systems". After almost half a century of absolute power on the mainland, say critics, the country's gerontocracy will be unable to resist the temptation to have a go at Hong Kong. But at best this is a theory founded on supposition. The author summarizes the evidence points overwhelmingly towards stability. |
