| Abstract | According to the author, the performance of banks in 1996 so far has been favourable. The effects of the so-called mortgage price war on the banks' overall net interest margin have been quite small. On the other hand, bad debt provisions by banks increased significantly in early 1996, albeit from a very low base. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has therefore started to collect information on credit card receivables and related charge-offs. In addition, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has asked banks to report their ten largest individual exposures within the special mention, substandard, doubtful and loss categories on the loan classification return. |
