AbstractEarlier in 1996, the Airport Authority (AA) released revised air traffic forecasts for Chek Lap Kok, highlighting the need for the second runway. These showed that nearly 34 million passengers would be likely to use the facility when it opens in 1998, over four million more than originally estimated. The Sino-British Joint Liaison Group's Airport Committee for Chek Lap Kok's second runway, then in May 1996, agreed that the AA should proceed quickly with their design and construction. The scope of works includes the runway itself, two parallel taxiways, runway and taxiway lighting, jet blast fencing, connections to the taxiway system and the northwest concourse apron and other government facilities.
