| Abstract | The issue of what sort of city people are creating in Hong Kong is being brought into sharp focus by the scale and rate of change in the urban area. In its new developments, Hong Kong is experiencing a privatisation of the public realm that reflects its changing land values. An inevitable aspect of this is that parts of the city that were once associated with street interest, condensed pedestrian movement networks and incidental 'events' are less people friendly, and less rich in terms of experience for the citizen. At the same time the flourishing private realm of multi-use centres, malls and atria are providing forums for theatrical events - literal stage sets for performances, lunch-time concerts, fashion shows and the like. |
