| Abstract | In 1995 the official price of cotton was raised, nearly ruining the entire textile industry of Yanchen county in Jiangsu province, which is both a major cotton producing region and an important textile industrial centre. As the price of cotton rose the profits of the textile enterprises fell, resulting in a combined loss of over 28 million Yuan by the end of 1995. The 1996 estimate is even more alarming. |
