Abstract | A potentially deadly toxin, ciguatera, found in fish from the South Pacific is increasingly making its way on to Hong Kong dinner tables. It exists in apparently healthy fish and cannot be destroyed by cooking. Initial symptoms of ciguatera poisoning resemble normal food poisoning. Vomiting and diarrhoea are followed by a severe stomach cramps. But unlike the bacteria which cause most food poisoning, ciguatera toxins attack the nervous system as well. Also, the toxin has been known to kill, though doctors say death is relatively rare. |
