| Abstract | Negotiations on China's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ahead of its creation on 1 January 1995 broke down, as predicted, on 20 December 1994 in an exchange of recriminations. But all is not lost. Long Yongtu, the Chinese negotiator, pointed out that the WTO and its predecessor, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), will exist in tandem for the whole of 1995 and that this provides a window of opportunity for further negotiations. |
