Abstract | One in every six mainlanders - about 200 million people - are studying English in China. And this is only "a conservative estimate," according to Cen Jianjun, director of the Foreign Languages Education Office, under the Higher Education Department of the State Education Commission. Cen says the Chinese Government encourages the desire to learn English. "English, as an international language, has become an indispensable tool for the Chinese people to communicate with the world, and the enthusiasm for learning English is conducive to our modernization drive," he says. |
