| Abstract | In agriculture, learn from Dazhai. This was once the stirring slogan trumpeted far and wide throughout China -- a rallying call for the then 600 million peasants to endure hardship and wrest a living from nature. It was also a political call during the Cultural Revolution that lasted for 10 years. Times have changed and the winds of reform are blowing everywhere across the nation as class struggle is no longer the social imperative; rather, a better livelihood for the whole peasantry is the national goal. In these tumultuous years, how has Dazhai, once the champion of champions, fared? The author recently visited the village and found that a new spirit prevails. |
