| Abstract | Hong Kong has upped the ante in its bid to retain the title of Asia's leading financial centre. In April 1996, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced that it is setting up a mortgage corporation in the mould of Fannie Mae (the US Federal National Mortgage Association). In doing so, it is seeking to vivify the moribund mortgage-backed securities market and to enhance the size and reputation of the local debt markets. |
