Abstract | Currently ship scrapping facilities in the Asia-Pacific region are virtually dormant, said Gordon Siu, Hong Kong's Secretary for Economic Services in an address to the 5th Asian Shipowners Forum (ASF) in May 1996. He commended the efforts of the Forum's Scrapping Committee to re-activate the industry and said that any success in this endeavour would be a significant step towards achieving the goal of reducing sub-standard ships, which would in turn lead to better freight rates in the long term. |
