AbstractSmall wonder that Dali is fast becoming the tourist mecca of southwest China, with the 19 peaks of Cangshan rising steeply to its west and the tranquil waters of Erhai Lake stretching for some 40 km to the east. An eight-hour bus ride from Yunnan's modern capital of Kunming, Dali is a mediaeval town dating back to the 14th century. It stands on the site of a much earlier capital of an ancient tribal kingdom.
