| Abstract | Wei Jingsheng, the most prominent activist in the Chinese democracy movement, was sentenced to fourteen years in prison for "sedition" on 13 December 1995. It indicates how little impact sixteen years of economic liberalisation have had on modernising the Chinese legal system in any real sense of the word. Covering page after page with legislation does not constitute progress if the law is constantly flouted in practice and the courts remain tools of the political authorities. |
