| Abstract | Three Gorges Dam will be nearly two kilometres long and 185 metres high, and will cause the water level to rise to 175 metres. A total of 24,000 hectares of fertile farmland along 600 kilometres of the Yangtze's middle reaches will be flooded. Moreovers, a staggering 1.2 million residents in the area will be moved from their homes in the densely populated riverside towns to what in most cases will be less fertile slopes. |
