| Abstract | In China's vast countryside film shows have long been a worthwhile pastime of the rural people. They watch them for entertainment and also for education - often learning about the latest agricultural and scientific breakthroughs. For decades they were able to enjoy this recreational facility for only a few dollars a year per family. However, since last summer, administrative reforms have virtually wiped out this institution. The miniscule payment by each family was abolished as it was deemed an "arbitrary apportionment of funds." Without this income, the distributors are unable to finance the screening of movies and in turn those film studios which have produced valuable scientific and educational documentaries are struggling for survival. |
