| Abstract | The British chose leaders for Hong Kong in faraway London. Beijing developed a much more convoluted approach in selecting the chief executive for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In this article, the authors examine how it worked and how Tung Chee Hwa became Hong Kong's 1997 leader. The background of the four candidates, including Tung, Yang Ti Liang, Peter Woo Kwong Ching and Simon Li Fook Sean are delineated in the article. |
