Abstract | Tetanus is endemic in Hong Kong. The disease carries significant mortality rate but is potentially curable if managed properly. Diagnosis depends on recognition of clinical signs and there is no investigation which is useful in establishing the diagnosis. Management includes administration of tetanus immunoglobulin, antibiotics, local wound management, and in severe cases, sedation, paralysis and mechanical ventilatory support, control of autonomic dsyfunction, and nursing care. It is most important to prevent the disease by promoting immunisation. |
