| Abstract | In early 1994 nominations were invited for the 1995 award and the name of Professor Charles Kao, Vice Chancellor of the Chinese University, Fellow and now Honoarary Fellow of the HKIE was approved to be nominated. Few were aware that it was Charles' research in the early 1960s, in London, which showed the way for the development of fibre optics as a means of transmitting signals "by wire", thus revolutionizing telephone systems worldwide. |
