AbstractRecent progress has been made in the development of a safe and effective vaccine aganist Salmonella typhi. The oral live-attenuated Ty21a vaccine and the recently licensed Vi capsular polysaccharide vaccine are demonstrably more efficacious and safer than the older parenteral inactivated vaccine. Due consideration for vaccination should be given to high-risk groups including those anticipated prolonged and unprotected exposure to contaminated food and drink, intimate household contacts of typoid carriers as well as laboratorians who work frequently with the bacillus. While limitations certainly exist for more extensive use of the vaccine, these recent advancements have considerably broadended the scope of coverage and provided the impetus for future development of better typhoid vaccines.
