| Abstract | Taiwan's beleaguered but defiant Lee Teng-hui has announced this week that he will run in the presidential elections next March, promptly causing a split within the ruling Kuomintang. One of the party's vice-chairmen, General Hau Pei-tsun, voiced strong opposition to Lee's intentions. Another vice-chairman, Lin Yang-kang, also a rival for the presidential nomination, declared he would seek public endorsement for his candidacy and was prepared to be expelled by the Lee-controlled party. |
