| Abstract | Sir Henry Blake assumed governorship of Hongkong in 1898. It was a significant year for Hongkong, as Britain had just negotiated the lease of the New Territories, to be added to Hongkong and Kowloon for 99 years. Various legal snags, however, delayed the actual hand-over of the territory until April 1899, and it fell upon Governor Blake to effect a peaceful transfer of the territory from Chinese to British (Hongkong) administration. |
