AbstractJust when investors were beginning to peer cautiously at the Chinese markets again, scandal hit. Speculators in government bond futures gambled the wrong way last week in Shanghai, forcing the China Securities Regulatory Commission to actually cancel the last eight minutes of trading on Thursday and order positions to be unwound. The reported US$100 billion turnover that day was mostly fuelled by speculators hoping to sell the market short; when it threatened to go the other way at the end of the day, frantic punters attempted to push the market down.
