AbstractThis is a review of the epidemiology studies of alcoholism in the Chinese minorities in the past ten years. Besides its majority Han population, China has fifty-five minorities. Each of them has very different cultural background. In the eighties, a number of studies in about twenty minorities showed a much higher rate of alcohol dependence in most of these minorities compared with the Hans. The rate of alcohol consumption was also found to be increased in many minority groups. The higher incidence of alcoholism in the minorities could be explained in several ways according to the historical and the cultural backgrounds of respective ethnic groups.
