Abstract | The past eighteen years were a crucial period in Hong Kong's history, with Britain and China locked into lengthy, tedious and often acrimonious negotiations for a smooth transfer of sovereignty. Beginning July 1, 1997, Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China with its political, social and economic system intact under the "One Country, Two Systems" concept devised by the late Deng Xiaoping. Despite these ongoing wrangles over transfer of power between London and Beijing, the Hong Kong economy continued to prosper for the majority of the community, and business groups were more concerned about bread-and-butter issues. Hong Kong Business coverage reflected these trends. The SAR of Hong Kong celebrates its third anniversary in July 2000 and Hong Kong Business its eighteenth. The article highlights the major events in Hong Kong which were faithfully recorded by the magazine over those years. |
