Abstract | Anxiety is a common experience, and anxiety disorders are common in the community, especially among the patients attending primary care clinics. However, they are often undiagnosed as the patients often have associated physical complaints and/or diseases. Anxiety disorders are marked by autonomic hyperactivity and avoidance behaviour, and are grouped into different specific disorders according to their unique features. Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is one form of anxiety disorder, marked by chronic excessive fear or worry, and diagnosed after exclusion of other similar anxiety disorders and primary medical conditions. Prompt diagnosis and treatment with psychotherapy and medications can alleviate morbidity and disabilities. |
