AbstractUpper respiratory tract infection (URTI) or common cold is the commonest illness worldwide. It is a self-limiting disease of viral origin. Various types of drugs are used in managing children with URTI including antibiotics, antihistamines and various cough mixtures. However, there is little clinical evidence to prove that they are effective in reducing the duration and symptoms of URTI. The potential risks and adverse effects of these medications in children should not be under-estimated. Overuse of powerful antibiotics has become a very serious problem, leading to bacterial resistance rendering antibiotics ineffective in certain diseases.
