AbstractBeginning in 1992, China sent many city officials to the United States (US) to study governmental affairs. In order to help foster greater economic development, city planning was one of the major areas of concentration. Those with ambitious plans often call in the eponymous firm of J.A.O Design, Architects and Planners Limited, a company that has established themselves in the niche market of mainland masterplanning. The town planners of Longwan District, Huludao City in Liaoning Province -- by the efforts of James Jao, who is the first Asian-American Planning Commissioner in the history of New York -- were so impressed that the government named the planned district James Jao Square.
