Abstract | The article describes the process of setting nursing standards at practice level. It begins by relating the experiences of a working group, consisting of practising nurses, which undertook the task of writing nursing standards without any previous experience. The ensuing discussion relates the sequence of decision-making and the main issues encountered by the group. Each of the stages which the group encountered represents major issues in the practical identification of nursing standards. They include: group learning, deciding on service philosophy, selecting a framework and the presentation of standards. The discussion will conclude by looking at the ways in which the standards, once written, can be put to use in the day-to-day management of the ward or department. |
