AbstractThis study used a repeated measures research design to compare the relative impact of night and day duty on the well-being of student nurses. Fifteen student nurses working in a large teaching hospital in Hong Kong completed sets of questionnaries daily over seven consecutive night duty and three day duty shifts. Analysis of responses showed that working night duty had an adverse effect on physical, psychological and social well-being as demonstrated by more physical symptoms, higher levels of psychological stress, and greater disruption to social activities and relationships. Findings from this study are discussed in relation to previous research and implications for nursing practice.
